Marriage built on three pillars
“Among His signs is that He created spouses for you from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed love and mercy between you” (30:21). The three pillars are tranquility (sakan), love (mawadda) and mercy (raḥma).
Family is the heart of Muslim life. Kindness to parents is placed right after worshipping God: “Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and be good to your parents” (17:23).
Care for one another
Men and women are equal before God in faith and reward (33:35). Women have the right to own property, earn, inherit, receive education and consent to marriage.
The Prophet was told so often to care for neighbours that he thought they would inherit. Orphans, travellers and the poor all have a claim on us.
“I was sent to perfect good character.” Honesty, keeping promises and gentle speech are acts of worship.
Seven human rights in the Qur’an
Rights come from God, so no ruler can take them away.
- Life — Taking one innocent life is like killing all humanity (5:32).
- Dignity — “We have honoured the children of Adam” (17:70).
- Belief — “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256).
- Justice — Stand firm for justice, even against yourself (4:135).
- Property — Wealth may not be taken unjustly (2:188).
- Privacy — Do not spy on one another (49:12).
- Equality — The most honoured is the most God-conscious, not the richest or strongest (49:13).
Inside a mosque
- Prayer hall — An open carpeted space; no pews, everyone stands shoulder to shoulder.
- Miḥrāb — A niche showing the direction of Mecca, the qibla.
- Minbar — Steps or a pulpit for the Friday sermon.
- Wuḍūʾ area — Where people wash before prayer. Visitors are welcome; just remove your shoes.
“People are of two kinds: your brother in faith, or your equal in humanity.”
